bought a 95 k1500 slt for 2k. it has 234k miles on it. everything was fine, for about a thousand miles. then bubba's temporary "pretty her up for a sale" methods reared their ugly heads.

SO FAR. i have...
lost 3rd gear

sprang a radiator leak

transfer case pops into neutral when reversing or shifting into 2nd on hard throttle

my actions towards repair have been and will be:

recently purchased full trans rebuild/shift kit (i was told that the clutches are the most likely cause of the loss of 3rd gear)

i will be buying a new radiator, and investigating why this one cracked, considering its only a year old (i have no idea why this would happen repeatedly, since i never overheated it)

new engine and trans mounts and linkage bushings to prevent the transfer case malfunction (the general consensus for fixing this issue)

can anyone else offer advice in my predicament?

Repair ? Sorry no .
Mental ? Yes.
Keep in mind that you didn't pay a lot for it & it is 17 years old .

If it were I and I had a few a bucks I would replace EVERY piece of vacuum
hose , radiator hoses , belts , thermostat & every other nickel & dime part
under the hood based on thee assumption that they are old and
are bound to fail at any moment.
I would then jack up the front end & shake , twist & turn every piece of
linkage looking for worn parts that are sure to cause grief down the road.
I would also inspect the rotors / pads / brake hoses while it's in the air.

Then I would jack up the back end , remove the tires & check the brakes / drums out .
While there I would also inspect the conditions of the lines .
I would also check the U- joints & exhaust system while my hands were dirty.

Basically with a used /older vehicle I try to eliminate the headaches before they happen ,
and if I have to spend a few bucks I'd rather do it when it's convenient to me.
: )

i'm sorry but anyone that buys a tk with 234k on it and thinks it will be trouble free should go back to school..............

i expected trouble, just didnt think all the problems would magically gang up on me at once. the leak ended up being on the shaft of the water pump. right now im rebuilding the trans, and new motor and trans mounts should take care of the transfer case malfunction

the way i see it, i paid 2k for it. a brand new truck is around 30k+. i saved 28 thousand for parts

I got my '90 Sub for 700 and put 700 into it then the steering column went to shit. Replacing it now and planning on replacing and checking everything else like ferret mentioned! I had to flush the radiator about 8 times and is still not completely clear so that will be the first thing replaced. I knew what I was getting into considering it sat in the tow yard for a year.
