Bought a new AT4 with the 3.0 Duramax a few weeks ago. 24 hours later with 89 miles on the odometer the engine had a catastrophic failure. GMC said it required a complete engine replacement. I asked for a replacement vehicle since I took delivery the afternoon prior and only drove 82 miles. They are pushing for me to accept a warranty repair and move on. I countered that accepting a replacement engine on a new vehicle is unreasonable from both a reliability and value point of view. It’s still in the shop being repaired (20 days and counting). I would appreciate anyone’s thoughts about how to proceed. Thanks.
 
Being it happened less than 24 hours from you taking delivery, are they not going to to replace the vehicle?
 
I would keep pushing for a replacement vehicle, but I know that is also an uphill battle. I was able to get a replacement vehicle about 2 months after purchase on another manufacturers vehicle, but that was after discovering that the vehicle I purchased had been wrecked and sold as new to me (apparently wrecked by dealership personnel or on a test drive). It had 40 miles when I bought it and had just over 5,000 when they replaced it.

Quick update. I got the vehicle back after 37 days in the shop and an engine replacement. GMC flat out refused to replace the vehicle. 24 hours after I got it back it had a total electrical failure. The mechanics at the dealership say that they think one of the computer modules failed. The next step for me after this second failure is to file a lemon law complaint. If they decide to do the right thing I can always drop it, but until then I will ho the legal route. Thank you all for your replies.

Lemon Law! This is reason it exist. Have GM give you a new AT4. Nothing less.
 
I think after this I would just push for them to buy it back at the original cost and move on to a different manufacturer. My GMC Sierra has been pretty much trouble free, but the experience you are having would certainly make me run.
 
FWIW...........I had catrastrohic engine failure at 40K miles ( Yukon Denali-Gasoline) Q valve spring broke and casused pistion head damage. It was of course covered by GM 50K warranty. 4 days later I nervously got it back. That was 10 months ago and its BETTER than new. Anything can fail for any reason. Likely an error on repair that can easily be fixed. Drive a bit and sell before Warranty is up? I guess they have great mechanics in this Dealership! I wish u the same luck.....
 
In Illinois if a vehicle is out of service for more than 30 business it qualifies for the lemon law.
