Please guide me in ball joint replacement

'95 Sierra 1/2 ton 4x4.
I have the new ball joints. Bolt on for the upper. Press on for the lower. I have the cotter pins out...yippee...worst part is over :rolleyes:
Do I just unbolt the control arm from the ball joints and it will drop far enough? Or do I need to remove the caliper and tie rod? What do I do with the upper rivits...grind them off? Obviously, but I felt that I need to verify first.
Any suggestions or help will be appreciated.
 
frist off do you have a ball joint press?
2nd (no disrespect) this job is not for a BEGINNERS! You need to remove the knuckle press out and in the lower ball. Does the upper have rivots? belive so unless it's been done before.
 
I have the caliper and rotor off. Having trouble with the tie rod stud turning. But thats ok cause thats the least of my trouble. Now I learn that I think I need to remove the half shaft, or do I? Please tell me what I need to do.
 
I have the press. The upper has rivets. I don't think the actual ball joints will be a problem for me. The problem is knowing how to get to them. The hub (is it called a hub on a 4x4?) needs to come off but I am not sure if it pulls off of the axle shaft or if the axle shaft comes off with it.
 
listen at this point my best avise is to get help in person from some one that knows how to do the job. Or start watching alot of you tube and learn how!

axle shaft has a nut on it that must come off to allow the bearing assembly to slide off the shaft. I think there are four studs on the back of the knuckle assy that hold the bearing in the knuckle. Have to remove the bearing assy from the knuckle to allow the axle shaft to be moved clear of the ball joint area.

WRONG do not rermove the wheel bearing does nothing for your job!!!

like i said remove the knuckle (the part that the upper and lower ball joint bolt too)
